Meet Our Team

Savi Hamal
Founder | Speech Pathologist | Orofacial MyologistSavi Hamal is the founder of Savi Communicators, a practice dedicated to empowering children and adults who have difficulties with communication and to find their voice and participate meaningfully in the community.
She works collaboratively with a wide range of health professionals to advocate for orofacial myology and feeding difficulties. Currently on her own orofacial myology journey, Savi understands firsthand the impact oral dysfunctions can have. This lived experience fuels her passion for addressing the root cause of challenges not just the symptoms and for educating others about the importance of early, functional intervention.
A key goal for Savi is to advocate for and educate the community on celebrating each individual’s differences. She began this mission by becoming an active member of the Nepalese Australian Allied Health Professionals Association (NAAHPA), where she has served on the National Executive Team since 2023. She also represents NAAHPA as a spokesperson. Through this role, Savi is able to raise awareness about the acceptance of all disabilities and highlight the value of speech pathology services in Nepal, for both families and health professionals.
She is inspired by the words of Robert M. Hensel: “There is no greater disability in society than the inability to see a person as more.”
Savi has recently taken on a new role as a Clinical Educator for the University of Sydney, supervising speech pathology students through placement opportunities.
Outside of work, Savi enjoys spending time with her two cats, Cupcakes and Muffinsa and fiancé, creating TikTok content, and embracing new adventures.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Speech Language Thepary
What is Speech Pathology?
Speech Pathology is a type of therapy that supports babies, children and adults with a range of communication, swallowing and feeding differences.
What is the difference between speech and language therapy?
Speech therapy targets the sounds that a person is making, whilst language therapy targets the words and sentences a person uses.
How do I know if my child needs therapy for their speech or language?
Some children are simply late talkers, whereas others may require additional support. If your child is not meeting key communication milestones, it is recommended that they see a speech pathologist for assessment.
What sorts of speech and language difficulties do you offer support for?
We support children and adults with:
● Speech or language delays
● Reading or writing challenges
● Stuttering
● Social communication difficultiesWhat formats of therapy are available?
We offer therapy face to face, online or via home/school visitations. We offer individual as well as group therapy sessions.
How often will I/my child need therapy?
We typically see clients weekly or fortnightly, however this is dependent on the needs and capacities of each client.
What payment options are available?
Our clinic offers payment options via NDIS (self managed and plan managed) or Medicare with an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) referral from a GP.
Do you work with autistic people or additional needs?
Yes! We are highly experienced in working with autistic people and people with additional needs. We are highly committed to providing neurodiverse affirming and inclusive therapy, and we tailor each session to a person’s individual strengths and areas of support.
What is AAC?
AAC stands for ‘Alternative and Augmentative Communication’ and refers to a range of different tools and strategies that can support a person’s communication. Some examples include the use of gesture (e.g. Key Sign), communication boards, or the use of speech generating apps.
Will my child stop learning to speak if they use AAC?
No. It is a common myth that children will stop learning to speak if they rely on the use of AAC, for example a speech generating app. Studies have shown that AAC can have a highly positive impact on the development of speech and language by providing lots of opportunities to practice generating language themselves.

Orofacial Myology (OM)
What is Orofacial Myology (OM)?
Orofacial myology is therapy that strengthens and retrains the muscles of the tongue, lips, jaw, and face in both children and adults. It supports correct breathing, swallowing, chewing, and speaking patterns, and promotes healthy dental and facial development.
Who would benefit from Orofacial Myology Therapy?
Orofacial myology can support both children and adults who experience:
● Mouth breathing or chronic nasal blockage
● Snoring or sleep related breathing difficulties
● Teeth grinding
● Tongue thrust or abnormal swallowing
● Low tongue posture or weak oral muscles
● Speech, chewing, feeding, or sleep difficulties linked to tongue or lip function
● Jaw tension, TMJ pain, or poor oral posture
● Challenges after dental or orthodontic treatmentWhat do you work on as part of Orofacial Myology Treatment?
Therapy involves learning a range of exercises and techniques that focus on building functional skills across several key domains:
● Breathing: establishing nasal breathing during day and night
● Tongue posture & mobility: correct resting posture, tongue tie, lip tie and buccal tie considerations and lingual palatal suction
● Dentition & palate: narrow/high palate, dental crowding and dental wear
● Sleep & airway: snoring, airway resistance and maintaining nasal breathing
● Posture & muscular tension: neck/shoulder tension and slouching
● Psychosocial factors: stress or anxiety that may influence breathing and muscle toneDoes Orofacial Myology Treatment replace seeing a dentist or orthodontist?
No. OM works alongside airway focused dentists, orthodontics, ENTs, and body‑based practitioners.
Does Orofacial Myology Treatment hurt?
No, all exercises are gentle and habitual.
How long will Orofacial Myology Treatment take?
Orofacial Myology is highly individualised, and so treatment time can vary from individual to individual. Typically, treatment will take at least 4 months.
What delivery options are available?
Orofacial myology is best delivered as individual face to face sessions, often in collaboration with airway focused dentists, ENTs, orthodontists, and body‑based practitioners such as osteopaths and chiropractors.
Do I require a GP referral?
We recommend obtaining a GP referral when seeing an OM trained Speech Pathologist, as it will allow you to claim Medicare rebates. Contact us, so we can discuss options to tailor your needs.

Gender Affirming Voice Therapy (GAVT)
What is Gender Affirming Voice Therapy?
Gender affirming voice therapy is a specialised area of speech pathology where we help people align their voice and communication with their gender identity.
There are distinct aspects of the voice that impact the way our gender may be perceived; how high or low it is, the bright or dark quality it has and also the way in which we express and use language.
We can help you discover the different ways you can tailor your voice to decrease dysphoria in an accepting and safe space.
Who will benefit from Gender Affirming Voice Therapy?
Gender Affirming Voice Therapy is typically sought after by transgender and gender diverse individuals who wish to learn how to use and alter their voice to better match their authentic self.
Due to the complexity of surgery and limitations of hormone therapy, the majority of clients who seek therapy are looking to feminise their voice. However, non-binary and transmasculine individuals are equally recommended to engage in this kind of therapy to support their journey.
What do you work on? (e.g., pitch, resonance, communication style, vocal health)
This kind of voice therapy starts with assessment, to gauge the current voice status, flag any potential issues as well as to provide education about vocal anatomy and hygiene.
Then we explore the aspects of voice that attribute to gender. Pitch (how high or low the voice sounds) and Resonance (the acoustic quality of the voice) are the main contributors to how voice may be gendered.
To achieve a more feminine sound, for example, we would slowly work towards comfortably speaking at a higher pitch and on focusing our sound and shaping our mouth to achieve a brighter and lighter tone.
You can then explore things like how we use melody, rhythm and emphasis to express ourselves (intonation) as well as use of gesture, body language and communication style.
The goal of therapy is to provide you with the tools to better understand your voice and how to use it in a safe manner that you can maintain. Ultimately, to learn a new voice technique will take time and practice and the best results will occur when you allow yourself to listen and reflect on the changes you are trying to make.
Delivery options - can it be done face to face or online?
This kind of voice therapy can be done face to face and or online. Telehealth offers the particular benefit of allowing the clients to stay in their safe space while exploring these vocal techniques. However, in person also gives the clinician more ability to monitor voice quality and potential incorrect habits and engage in a more realistic communication experience.
Accessing it - do clients need a GP referral?
No, you do not need a GP referral to access Gender Affirming Voice Therapy services. However, you might be able to claim a Medicare rebate if your GP provides you with a Chronic Disease Management Plan.
It's important to note even with this plan, you are only allocated 5 subsidised services for the calendar year and you may need to split these up among allied health services depending on your individual needs.
